Biography

Christian studied Industrial Engineering from 2001 to 2006 at the Otto-von-Guericke University in Magdeburg. From 2007 to 2009 he gained practical experience as a project engineer at AREVA NP GmbH for nuclear power plants in Erlangen and Hamburg. He assisted the project leader at the power plant near Hamburg in different maintenance projects (valves and tubes). For e.on he was responsible for the development of an overall maintenance strategy of nuclear power plant valves for the whole e.on plant fleet. In 2011 he finished his M.Sc. in Human Factors with emphasis on psychological courses after two years of studying at the Technical University of Berlin. During his time in Berlin he was a scholarship holder of the ESF (European Social Fund) for being part of the founding team of the YOUSE GmbH (→link) which focuses on user friendly products, user innovation and user involvement. At the end of 2011 Christian started his work as a graduate research assistant at the Institute of Ergonomics within the research initiative UR:BAN (→ link). He assists the project leader of the project column "Human Factors in Traffic" Prof. Bengler in administrative tasks, represents the project leader in the project steering commitee, co-organizes half-term and final event of the project and the scientific conference at the end of the project duration in February 2016. Furthermore he works in the sub project "Simulation and Behavior Modelling" where he focuses on the method of linked simulation (→link), the quantification and visualization of social interaction in driving simulator environments and the evaluation of experiments that use multi party simulator settings.

In his PhD thesis Christian concentrates on the evaluation of the interaction behavior of urban road users using a multiple simulator setting. Especially crossing situations where drivers encounter different types of pedestrians (programmed vs. human-controlled) and crossing situations are of interest as well as the methods to evaluate and quantify the occuring mutual behavior adaption processes.

His activities focus also on the development of international research cooperations with universities in the USA (Harvard Medical School→link), China (Beijing Institute of Technology→link), Vietnam (Hanoi University of Science and Technology→link) and France (IFSTTAR→link)

Christian is a member of the eligibility commission and student advisor for the study programme "Human Factors Engineering" (→link) at the Technical University of Munich.

As a reviewer he is involved in the evaluation procedure for the submissions of the IEEE ITS conference (→link)and the journal IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Vehicles (link).

From January 2017 on, Christian is a research fellow (funded by a DAAD scholarship) at the Harvard Medical School (→ link) where he sets up a driving simulator to investigate the effects of visual impairments (e.g. low vision, hemianopia) in driving performance and interaction. Especially the behavior adaption between visually impaired drivers and pedestrians will be analyzed.
